The Makings of A Manja

2024

What is a Manja?

A manja is a traditional wooden bed or cot found in South Asia, especially in Punjab, India, and Pakistan. Also known as a charpai or charpoy, its design consists of a wooden frame with four sturdy legs, often made from neem or teak. The bed's surface is woven with natural fibers like jute or cotton strings, creating a flexible mesh that provides support.

The weaving technique allows for airflow, keeping the surface cool in the hot climate. Manjas are typically used in open courtyards or verandas for sitting, lounging, or sleeping. Lightweight and easily transportable, they can also be tightened when the strings become loose. Beyond their practical use, manjas symbolize hospitality and community in Punjabi culture, remaining a cherished part of everyday life.
